Swing State Project Offers Greatest Time Sink Ever

If you have been looking for a way to pass the time during the holiday season, the team over at Swing State Project have the answer.

Using the incredibly addictive Dave’s Redistricting App, they have launched a contest calling on their readers to redistrict the state of New York.

If you have never used the app, do so at your own peril. If you are a political junkie (particularly of the electoral variety), you will find your personal or workplace productivity shot to Hell. Indeed, you will likely wind up sitting at the computer for hours, tinkering with the wide variety of states that are already live on the site (with more being added).

As an added bonus, two of the states (Maryland and New York) now have partisan political data, so one can gear up their maps and look at the 2008 presidential vote tallies in their newly constructed districts.

As if any additional incentive were needed, the crew over at Swing State, commensurate with their usual awards package for sweet victory in SSP contests, are throwing in chocolate babka for the winner of the contest.

The rules, and there are several, are available over at SSP (or just click on the above link), but my personal favorite is the all-important Rule #5:

  1. Not a requirement, but bonus points for screwing Peter King in some fashion

Prospective cartographers have until midnight on Sunday, January 10th to complete their maps.
